Gudmar, also known as Gymnema Sylvestre, is a herb native to Asia that has been used medicinally in India for thousands of years. According to Ayurveda, it is referred to as Gudmar, meaning ‘Sugar-Destroyer’. Chewing Gudmar leaves temporarily numbs the taste of sugar on the tongue for 1-2 hours. Gudmar aids in maintaining healthy blood sugar levels by stimulating pancreatic secretion and enhancing its ability to metabolize excess sugar. According to the Bhavprakash Nighantu, an ancient Ayurvedic text, Gudmar has a bitter taste, becomes pungent after digestion, possesses dry properties, and aggravates the Vata dosha. Gudmar helps regulate bowel movements, improves digestion, suppresses sugar cravings, and promotes healthy glucose metabolism.
When Gudmar or Gymnema Powder is consumed with warm water in the morning, it reduces the formation of phlegm and cough in individuals with high sugar levels. Regular intake of Gymnema Powder over an extended period helps mitigate the negative effects of high blood sugar levels on the body and supports maintaining low average blood glucose or glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. Gudmar may also aid in healing diabetic wounds and repairing damaged tissues when combined with other healing herbs. High sugar levels can affect skin tone and colour, but Gymnema promotes a healthy complexion and skin colour.
Modern science and ongoing research reveal that Gudmar contains Gymnemic acids, which are excellent sugar metabolizers. Gymnemic acids stimulate pancreatic cells, thereby contributing to the maintenance of healthy blood sugar levels.
